High Esthetic Zirconia Teeth

Crowns are an integral part of dentistry since time immemorial. A Crown is a protective permanent restoration over a weak or broken tooth made up of different materials including meta, porcelain fused to metal and zirconia. There can be multiple reasons for which dental crowns are indicated including deep caries, proximal caries, enamel & dentin defects, broken tooth structure, after root canal treatment and for aesthetic transformation of discoloured teeth. A crown protects a weak tooth from fracture, prevents re-infection in a pulp treated tooth and in lot of cases to make it look aesthetic.

History has it that the first crowns in dentistry were metal crowns which came to be in use for a long time. Eventually, they lost popularity because of their unesthetic look. To have an aesthetic look, an outer layer of tooth coloured porcelain was added onto the metal which came to be known as Porcelain fused to metal crowns or the PFM Crowns. They had their share of popularity too as they were tooth coloured from the outer surface and strength of the metal as well. But, they came with a disadvantage of porcelain being chipped off from the top layer with time and unfinished gingival margins. To overcome all the above problems, Zirconia teeth were introduced to create perfect aesthetic crowns with spot on margins.

Since the introduction of Zirconia teeth in Dentistry, they have gained rocketing popularity because of multiple advantages. Zirconia teeth are made up of Zirconium oxide which has strength and aesthetics. It is stronger than many metal alloys and Porcelain and is more resistant to fracture or breakage. Along with high strength, it has superior colour matching with the patient’s natural tooth colour. It does not get much effect from regular wear and tear of mastication. It has minimal effect on the opposing teeth as compared to metal or porcelain which tend to have significant damage on the counteracting teeth. In addition, its smoothness prevents lodgement of plaque and calculus over the crown reducing the chances of gingivitis and periodontitis.

There are two types of Zirconia teeth, Monolith and Layered, both can be used for posterior and anterior crowns and bridges. Although, both have high strength, layered Zirconia teeth and bridges are the choice of treatment for front teeth as they have high aesthetic matching with the natural teeth. Both monolith and layered Zirconia teeth can be used for posterior teeth.
