Get the lightest shade of teeth with Laser

Teeth whitening is the mainstay treatment for yellowish or dark coloured teeth. Since ages, teeth whitening has been performed with different bleaching agents in different concentrations.

The most common whitening agent used is Hydrogen peroxide. Although, Hydrogen peroxide is an effective bleaching agent which lightens the shade of the teeth by 2 shades in the shade guide, it has many post-operative complications. One of the main complications is severe sensitivity while doing the procedure and after the completion as well. It occurs due to exposure of underlying dentinal nerves caused by demineralization of the inorganic content of the top layer of the teeth. Another major disadvantage is gingival irritation and ulcerations caused by reaction to hydrogen peroxide when it comes in contact with oral mucosa. Furthermore, hydrogen peroxide removes high amount of mineral content from the tooth structure while bleaching. The results of normal bleaching last only for 6-8 months.

To overcome the side effects of teeth whitening with hydrogen peroxide used in high concentrations, newer method of Power Teeth Whitening with LASER is becoming more and more popular. LASER Power Whitening is having far more advantages than Regular Bleaching. Firstly, there minimal or no sensitivity during and after the procedure. This can be explained by the preservation of mineral lattice of hydroxyapatite on the tooth surface which protects the dentinal nerves from any kind of trauma. Secondly, the whitening agent used with LASER is less acidic which reduces the chance of ulcerations or irritation of oral mucosa. Additionally, the duration of treatment is less as compared to regular bleaching. Most important advantage of power whitening with LASER is that it whitens the teeth to 3 to 4 shades less than the original shade of teeth and the results can last as long as 24 months if the patient follows the instructions given after the procedure.

Following is a case of LASER Power Teeth Whitening done at Floss Dental, Noida which is the first dedicated laser dental clinic in Noida. A 29 year old female patient came to the out-patient department at Floss Dental, Noida with a chief complaint of yellowish discolouration of all the teeth. On examination, it was found that the natural shade of her upper and lower dentition was yellowish in colour.  The patient was briefed about both types of teeth whitening procedures, regular and LASER powered. The patient opted for Power Teeth Whitening with LASER because of its advantages and longevity.

For starters, pre-operative shade of the patient’s teeth was recorded which was C2 according to the shade guide. After shade selection, full mouth scaling and polishing was performed with ultrasonic scaler and air polisher to clean all the surfaces of the teeth and smoothen them. Following this, a cheek retractor was used for pull away the buccal mucosa from the teeth. Gingival barrier was then applied along the gingival margins and light cured to stabilize in that position. Power whitening agent was then freshly mixed and applied onto the dried labial and buccal surfaces of the teeth. The mix was then activated with 940nm Diode laser for 2-4 minutes. The solution is then washed off with water and air spray. Post operative shade was then checked which came out to be the lightest shade in natural human dentition, that is, A1. Some cases might require another cycle if the patient desires a lighter shade. Once the procedure is over, the gingival barrier and cheek retractor are then removed. Flouride gel is applied on all the teeth to prevent any sensitivity for 1 minute. After the procedure, patient was instructed to avoid substances which can cause colour change for 15 days like turmeric, wine, aerated drinks etc. A follow up visit is kept every 6 months to check for colour changes.
